Why I Recommend Morning Start Times for Newborn Sessions (And What My Process Looks Like Behind the Scenes)

Welcoming a new baby is a beautiful whirlwind—exhausting, emotional, and overflowing with love. I know just getting out the door can feel like a victory in those early days. So when I suggest a 9:30 or 10:30 AM start time for newborn sessions, it’s never to add more stress—it’s actually to help everything flow a little more smoothly.

Here’s a peek behind the scenes of why I recommend morning sessions, and how I structure my day to give you the best experience possible.

Newborns are typically most settled and sleepy during the earlier part of the day. This makes it easier to gently guide them into those peaceful, cozy poses we all love. A well-timed sleep can do wonders for a smooth, relaxed session—and trust me, I’m always following baby’s lead.

My newborn sessions aren’t rushed. I set aside up to three hours so we can take our time—pausing for feeds, diaper changes, and all the snuggles in between. Every baby is different, and I want your experience to feel unhurried, calm, and full of intention.

Once the session ends, I immediately start working behind the scenes: uploading images, backing up files, and selecting a handful of favourites to prepare your previews while the details are still fresh in my mind. This post-session time is just as important as the session itself, and having a quiet, focused window in the afternoon helps me preserve the heart of your session while it’s still alive in my memory.

Because I run my studio from home, I do my best to keep sessions within business hours (Monday to Friday, 9 to 3:00 PM). After 4:30 PM, my house shifts into family mode ..my kids return from school and activities, and like any household, it becomes a little more chaotic (and a lot louder). By keeping sessions earlier in the day, I can fully focus on your experience without distraction—and also keep a healthy rhythm for my own family.

I completely understand that mornings can be tough—especially with a brand new baby. If the idea of a 9:30 or 10:30 AM start time feels overwhelming, I’m always open to discussing slightly later options (like 11:30 or noon) that still allow us to make the most of baby’s sleepy window and stay within my studio hours.

Ultimately, my goal is to create a session that feels calm, supportive, and meaningful—for both of us.
